10 Times WWE And WCW Screwed Over Their World Champions

8. Rey Mysterio Working Double Duty

During the 2011 angle often referred to as 'The Summer of Punk' in reference to CM Punk's past at Ring of Honor, Rey Mysterio became the WWE Champion in the conclusion of an eight man tournament in the absence of both CM Punk and John Cena. After defeating The Miz to earn his first WWE Championship, Rey Mysterio would be confronted by John Cena, who was absent from Raw for all of one week, before challenging Mysterio on that very same show. An already exhausted, weakened Mysterio would accept and lose, being robbed of his gold just as soon as he had claimed it. Rey Mysterio didn't necessarily deserve the title, but giving it to him and taking it away in one night gives the overt feeling that he was screwed in the storyline, one he arguably shouldn't have been a part of in the first place. Did Cena need to challenge Mysterio that night, Mysterio had already wrestled and the match only went to characterize Cena as praying on the weak. They could have delayed this match until the next pay-per-view, then had CM Punk come out after the match, with the stare down that happened on Raw, feeling more like a big, defining moment on pay-per-view.
