10 Times WWE And WCW Screwed Over Their World Champions
7. Goldberg
Goldberg was dominant for most of his reign in WCW, but creative seemed to only know what to do when building him up, once he'd reached the top, the ideas ran out rather quickly. Upon defeating Hulk Hogan on a fateful episode of Nitro in 1998, Goldberg became WCW World Heavyweight Champion. Question is, what do you with a dominant, unflinching monster when there's no competition left - any reasonable candidates left for him to feud with, had already been squashed on his way to the main event. One could argue that he gained the gold far too quickly, that Goldberg should have failed, before succeeding. Upon realizing that their monster babyface was better off chasing the title than wearing it, WCW desperately tried to come up with reasonable solutions for how he could lose the title, but still appear strong. What they came up with was Goldberg losing to Kevin Nash, after Scott Hall stunned him with a taser gun, when Nash didn't need the title at all. This match made a huge joke of Goldberg's win streak, when it would have made much more sense to just have Goldberg cheated out of his title by interference, or a bias referee. After Goldberg lost his title, fans quickly stopped caring about his streak, and WCW's last hottest star they had began to significantly cool off. It's fair to say that Goldberg was screwed booking-wise, as his entire rise to success had been wasted, with virtually no pay off for anyone.
