Some matches are thrown together due to unfortunate injuries or quite simply because Vince McMahon has had one of his infamous changes of hearts.

Yet, sometimes these last minute enforced changes can come to pass due to some truly harrowing reasons and 2007's Vengeance: Night of Champions' altered ECW title match between Chris Benoit and CM Punk definitely falls into that category.

Benoit no-showed the event after he'd earned the chance to take on Punk for the vacant ECW Championship and fans (and the company) were left in the dark as to why the 'Rabid Wolverine' hadn't appeared on the night.

It would later become common knowledge that Benoit had in fact killed his family and committed suicide.

However, WWE were not aware of these tragic circumstances and still had to put on a match. So, they instead opted to throw Johnny Nitro into the mix for the vacant title and two electric superstars would do their utmost to steal the show on the night.

If John Morrison and CM Punk were to wrestle a match in 2019, you'd probably be able to sell-out a stadium full of fans eager to see the two world class performers throw down. But, here it was in 2007, with no build, little fanfare and as the consequence of some completely unpredictable events.
