10 Times WWE Wrestlers Played Several Characters At Once

The more the merrier as Bray Wyatt, Triple H and others double down with dual gimmicks.

Wrestlers are artists.

No other platform combines actual physical stunts with storytelling and narrative quite like professional wrestling. The incredible men and women who step between those ropes for the sake of our entertainment are supremely talented individuals. Which is why it doesn’t really come as a surprise that they've portrayed multiple on screen characters at once.

This gets even more amazing because these wrestlers also infuse the character fluctuations into their in-ring styles, making for some truly amazing storytelling. Nowadays this is synonymous with Bray Wyatt and The Fiend, however the former Eater of Worlds is certainly not the only creative genius to pull this feat off.

Some of these became legends and found their dual portrayals vividly remembered and celebrated. Others may not have made quite as big an impression with their dual personas but deserve recognition all the same...

10. Hulk Hogan / Mr. America

Hogan’s last full-time run with WWE was the definition of topsy-turvy. You had things like that legendary showdown with The Rock at WrestleMania 18 at one end, on the other end you had car wrecks like the worst-Chokeslam-ever during his World Championship-losing bout with The Undertaker. Nothing however, can compare with the sheer bizarreness of the Mr. America angle.

Following his match with Vince McMahon at WrestleMania XIX, Hogan continued his feud with the boss by returning as a masked figure calling himself Mr. America. Of course there was barely even a sense of pretence to all this. America used all of Hogan’s gestures and moves, and even came out to his entrance music.

It was not like the story was meant to pretend otherwise. The whole thing was centred around McMahon trying to get the masked figure to admit he was Hulk Hogan and no longer part of WWE. The audience were being asked to believe the masked dude and not Vince, despite the fact that it was clear as day what was happening. Still, the Hulkster did technically play these two characters at once, so here he is.

After battling Galactus and pinning Hulk Hogan in the main event of Wrestlemania, I've taken a break from living in fantasy worlds, to focus on writing about them. I'm a comic book geek, a wrestling mark, a break dancer, and a scientist. One of those things may not be true.
