10 Times WWE Wrestlers Stole Spotlight In Defeat

1. The Undertaker (Vs. Roman Reigns, WrestleMania 33)

For years, decades even (well, technically), the idea of The Undertaker losing at WrestleMania was arguably the biggest deal in professional wrestling. Bigger than championships, bigger than main events, bigger than anything. Fans fantasy-booked themselves into a frenzy trying to figure out who was best suited to ending The Streak. For the record, Ted DiBiase Jr. was actually the popular choice for a shockingly long time.

Brock Lesnar ended The Streak, and ‘Taker understandably got to leave the WrestleMania XXX stage on his terms. All good, all fine. Did he need to do an even more elaborate exit after his second WrestleMania loss, just three years later? The novelty of ‘Taker losing at ‘Mania had certainly rubbed off by the time Roman Reigns took control of the yard, but Undertaker’s post-match fake retirement looks even worse in hindsight.

WWE has failed to coronate Roman Reigns for a number of reasons, but its own refusal to go all-in on the Big Dog is among them. Reigns was given the holy grail of beating Undertaker at WrestleMania, only for the post-match to be all about an elaborate display of what turned out to be nothing more than vapid posturing. In this instance, Undertaker quite literally stole the spotlight.

For the record, The Undertaker has had nine more matches since emotionally ‘retiring’ in defeat at WrestleMania 33.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
