10 Times WWE Wrestlers Stole Spotlight In Defeat

8. John Cena (Vs. The Miz, WrestleMania XXVII)

Has anyone ever looked like more a geek while winning a WrestleMania main event? The Miz is frequently the answer to ‘looking like a geek’ related questions, but the former WWE Champion’s most irrelevant moment came at the end of his career-high. Miz successfully defended the WWE Championship against no less than John Cena in the main event of WrestleMania XXVII, but he was clearly the third most important individual. Maybe even fourth, Mike Chioda is very important after all.

The Miz pinned John Cena. That is what the record books say, but professional wrestling is about context, perception, reception and depiction. The Miz pinned John Cena, but nobody came away from the main event thinking to themselves ‘wow, that Miz sure is a credible champion, good work him’. Far from it. Everyone came away thinking ‘ah, so that’s how they are going to start the build to Cena vs. The Rock’.

The Rock hit Cena with a Rock Bottom, allowing gooseberry Miz to pick up the win. A W in the books, the winner’s share of the purse, a "thanks for coming and best of luck back down in midcard purgatory. We’ll be in touch".

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
