Following WrestleMania 36, when the realisation sank in for fans around the world that things were not normal, that they wouldn’t be for a long time, there was a difficult period of watching WWE. Despite good matches, seeing WWE’s Performance Centre programming felt like a reminder that nothing was okay.

Thankfully, in spite of creative issues and controversies, WWE did have many talent who capitalised on the new atmosphere to connect with fans at home. Io Shirai, Damian Priest, Asuka and Randy Orton among others all did astonishing work to keep WWE shows from feeling pointless and overwhelming. But the main two were Sasha Banks and Bayley.

Their endlessly entertaining chemistry led to many humorous and brilliant SmackDown moments, some of the best promos of the year, and their tag title reign is easily the high point of the belts’ existence so far. They made you believe in their friendship and invest in their characters, even though they were antagonists.

Since splitting up, Sasha’s used the momentum she’s gained from the storyline to be the biggest babyface in the company, cutting emotional promos and putting on magnificent wrestling matches. Her greatness is so immense that a pandemic only boosted how essential she was.
