5. Randy Orton And Intermittent Explosive Disorder

Beginning in 2009, WWE fans saw a more aggressive version of Randy Orton evolve, starting with a swift punt to Mr McMahon.

As the gimmick developed, 'The Legend Killer' informed fans that he had Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) and could not control some of his more violent actions. Outside of the professional wrestling bubble, such as traditional TV dramas, a mental ailment tied into an ongoing narrative wasn't too unusual. However, under the confines of kayfabe (which aims to blur the line between fact and fiction), the schtick furrowed a few brows, to say the least.

Worse, there wasn't a strong payoff for the addition of IED to his character. It was mostly an excuse for Orton to do terrible things on a nightly basis, and it continues to be a strong part of his gimmick today.

One noticeable change, though, is WWE commentators refrain from insinuating 'The Viper' has any sort of mental illness, and they simply treat him like a real a**hole instead. Still, there was a time WWE was daring enough to even use a medical explanation on its website to justify what fans saw Orton doing. Even if the letters "IED" aren't uttered much today, it's still a thing on the company's programming, and it's never treated in any kind of moral-driven way. Orton's crazy. He hurts people. The end.
