10 Triple H Orchestrated Championship Screwjobs
1. Bret Hart – Survivor Series 1997
In amongst all the he-said-she-said of the Montreal Screwjob, one prevailing theory is that Triple H played an important part in orchestrating the plan as he was the first one to broach the idea.
In another screwjob that breaks beyond the realm of kayfabe, it was revealed in Shawn Michaels’ 2005 book, Heartbreak and Triumph, that Triple H had planted the seed for the plan that would see Hart lose the WWE Title at Survivor Series after the finish was changed without his knowledge.
In the week leading up to the show, and with Hart on his way out of the company, a backstage meeting saw Triple H float the idea that everyone else was “dancing around.” Michaels later recalled on the Steve Austin podcast that “Hunter’s words were, ‘If he doesn’t want to do business with us, maybe we should do business for him.’”
Fast-forward to the show, and when Michaels locked Hart in a Sharpshooter – a spot that had been planned ahead of time – Vince McMahon had the referee call for the bell and announce Michaels the victor. The latter part, of course, very much hadn’t been agreed beforehand, creating an incident that left an indelible mark on the entire wrestling business and one that was, apparently, not without a degree of involvement from Triple H.
