10 Triple H Orchestrated Championship Screwjobs

2. CM Punk – SummerSlam 2011

Perhaps Bryan should have seen his double-cross coming, because two years previously, another SummerSlam main event involving Triple H as the guest referee had ended with post-match interference and a Money in the Bank cash-in off the back of it.

In a blast from the past, Kevin Nash showed up after CM Punk defeated John Cena for the title, where he promptly laid out the new champ and allowed Alberto Del Rio to cash-in to become the new WWE Champion.

On-screen, it was revealed – in convoluted fashion – that Nash had in fact been acting alone. However, this one still felt like something of a screwjob behind the scenes, because Triple H had seemingly shoehorned himself into Punk’s rise to prominence, halted the guy’s momentum and eventually gone on to beat him at the following month's PPV, and with little valid reason for doing so.

Thankfully, Punk went on to regain the WWE title and hold the gold for a staggering 434 days, but the whole Triple H debacle of those summer months felt like an unnecessary piece of shenanigans in a story that was doing just fine on its own.
