10 UFC Fighters Who Injured Themselves To Victory
5. Forrest Griffin's Broken Arm (Vs. Edson 'Paredao' Ramos)
One thing you probably already know by now about Forrest Griffin is that the man has heart. That never say die attitude and elite professionalism helped him forge a legacy within the sport that can still be felt today, as we regularly see him taking on punditry and coaching the next generation of UFC stars.
Technically this was under the Heat FC and not the UFC, but I'm sure you'll forgive us for giving the rub to one of the company's all-time greats and if not for this fight, his destiny may not have led him to the company in the first place.
Griffin and Edson 'Paredao' Ramos squared-off in the latter's native Brazil in December 2003. Paredao took the fight to Griffin and at one point, threw a kick so hard that it broke Griffin's left arm. We've mentioned a few arm breaks already but what sets this one apart is the onslaught that Griffin took to the injured area, following the strike. Paredao even got him in an armbar before Griffin miraculously escaped to keep himself in it. A vicious, healthy right hand gave Griffin the win but the damage had been done and there's still a prominent lump on the arm where the injury was sustained, to this day.
Griffin felt that this was the last straw and retired back to the life of a humble police officer, before Dana White and co begged him to perform a U-Turn for the first series of The Ultimate Fighter.
