10 UFC Fights That Did Not Go To Plan

1. Matt Serra Topples Georges St. Pierre (UFC 69)

At number one we have the fight which proved that anything was possible in the wonderful world of the UFC.

In the mid-2000s, Georges St. Pierre had just started to establish himself as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the company, racking up wins against Matt Hughes, B.J. Penn and Frank Trigg. He'd also recently captured the Welterweight title from Hughes and a lengthy run as Champion was almost inevitable.

Matt Serra was then lined up as his next opponent at UFC 69 and was an 11-1 underdog going into the pair's Welterweight title fight. No one was doubting Serra's ability, however GSP was operating on a different level at this time and it didn't look like there was a fighter in the division capable of stopping him.

Come fight night, though, Serra showed us that everything can change with a few well timed shots to the face as he battered GSP into the mat in the first round and became the UFC Welterweight Champion for the first time in his career.

It came literally out of nowhere and was rightly voted the Upset of the Decade.

GSP eventually got his revenge when he won a Welterweight title unification bout against Serra at UFC 83, but that didn't take anything away from one of the biggest unexpected twists in all of combat sports history.
