Match of the Night: Edge vs Kurt Angle

At a time when the Undisputed Title was still in play for both brands, company loyalty mattered in bringing more integrity to the belt and subsequent feuds. Since Hulk Hogan was only returning on a short-term deal and The Undertaker remained through the company’s turbulent patch, it made a lot of sense to have him take the belt. But the match itself wasn’t exactly top quality, as personified by the botched choke slam to Hogan. However, the card before the main event was both intriguing and allowed for some matches to gain more exposure than previously expected.

Rikishi winning the Tag Team Championships from Billy and Chuck with Rico as his mystery partner gave everyone the feel-good factor going into the main event, and a Hell in a Cell match that wasn’t standard rate surprised most at the time. But it was the story-telling and emotion-provoking match between Edge and Kurt Angle that stole the show. It wasn’t five stars but it engrossed the crowd as thoughts of what the competitors would look like bald both amused and horrified Michael Cole and Tazz. It gave Edge main-event credibility and seemed to be a fitting end to the programme between the two.
