10 Unlikeliest WWE WrestleMania Main-Eventers
3. Lawrence Taylor
Sometimes, you just need to look at an image and say, "Oh, 1995."
Things were desperate in the mid '90s for WWE. Attendance was at an all time low, ratings were down, and their stars just weren't connecting like they were during Hulkamania. It makes sense that Vince McMahon would want to reach out to the mainstream in order to get media exposure. It even makes sense to involve Lawrence Taylor in a high-profile angle. Fresh off retirement, LT was (and still is) considered by many to be the greatest American footballer of all time. As a spectacle, having him wrestle against someone like Bam Bam Bigelow is the kind of nifty, novel attraction you want for a show like WrestleMania.
But as the main event? When Taylor had never worked a match before? What were they thinking?
The match itself was fine, and Taylor looked perfectly competent, but when you're struggling as is to create stars, having them play second fiddle to a football player just made the problem worse.
In addition, the boys in the back were not happy about the billing, most especially Shawn Michaels, who resented Bigelow for getting the spot he felt he and Diesel deserved. Using their political leverage, HBK and the Kliq completely killed Bigelow's push in 1995, and he was gone from the company by the end of the year.
Not to say any of that is Taylor's fault, but hey, it's what happened.
