10 Unofficial Rules That Exist In WWE Today
5. The WrestleMania Main Event Doesn't Matter Anymore
WrestleMania III broke the world indoor attendance record because the main event of Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant was a match that everyone wanted to see. WrestleMania V generated nearly 800,000 PPV buys at a time when PPV was only just getting off the ground because the main event of Hulk Hogan vs. Macho Man was a match that everyone wanted to see. WrestleMania X-Seven is considered one of, if not THE, greatest WrestleManias of all time for many reasons but a large part involves the main event when Stone Cold Steve Austin battled The Rock in a match everyone wanted to see.
The past two WrestleManias have featured one of, if not THE, least over character in the history of the Show of Shows' main event in Roman Reigns. Unlike past WrestleManias, few wanted to see The Man in this position. Similarly in 2014, few people wanted to see Batista challenge for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. All this is to say that the main event of WrestleMania no longer has the importance it once held and is no longer the selling point of the show.
The last match at WrestleMania used to be THE biggest match of the year and the success of the company's year was determined by it. Hogan and Andre helped make 1987 one of WWE's best years ever. Conversely, Lawrence Taylor vs. Bam Bam Bigelow personified 1995 perfectly. Nowadays, the WWE has done such a great job branding WrestleMania to emulate the Super Bowl that it no longer matters what the marquee match-up will be, the show itself is the draw.
