10 Unsung Heroes Of WCW

3. Dustin Rhodes

Nowadays, Dustin 'Goldust' Rhodes gets his due as a respect, well-travelled near thirty year veteran of the ring wars. He's seen and done it all in the business, having wrestled on the independents, as well as for major companies like WWE and WCW. He's had to fight for that respect, however, having been viewed as a beneficiary of nepotism by some during his early days. He's most famous for his portrayal of the bizarre one, but before he donned the gold catsuit he was plain old Dustin Rhodes, clean-cut, cowboy boot-wearin' son of the legendary Dusty Rhodes. After a very brief run in WWE, Dustin found himself in WCW, wrestling as 'The Natural' and competing for the TV and World Tag Team Championships. His gimmick? He didn't really have one, per se. He was just a second generation rookie who was trying to prove himself against some of the best wrestlers in the world. You could see Runnels' improvement each week as he produced compelling contests against such esteemed names as Ricky Steamboat, Rick Rude, Steve Austin and William Regal. He was fired by the company in 1995 after breaking their 'no blading' policy and found himself wearing a blonde wig in the WWE. When he left WWE in 1999, he found himself back in WCW, where he was given an absolutely awful child abductor gimmick (as Seven). Dustin Rhodes worked his socks off for WCW and was one of their most promising prospects before he was released in 1995. When he came back in 1999 he did everything the company asked of him and gave his all to try and make it work. He's an unsung hero, for sure.
