The pro wrestling grind hit different in the late-80s and early-90s. Wrestlers routinely worked at least five dates per week, which also meant they'd sometimes only be at home for one full day out of seven. Even that was a luxury. Lengthy tours could see workers away from their families for entire months at a time; downtime was precious. So, picture the jealousy when Lex Luger signed his unique deal in 1992.

Ex-NWA/WCW man Luger signed on to become the face of Vince McMahon brand new World Bodybuilding Federation. He wasn't supposed to become a wrestler, but he inevitably did once the WBF flopped. At first, Lex was paid a handsome chunk of change to stay at home and train. A lot of weary wrestlers out on the road had to be really, really jealous of that deal.

Their bodies were screaming from taking bumps, and then they had to cram their hulking frames onto planes, trains and automobiles to make the next town. It was a brutal schedule. Meanwhile, Luger could hit the gym at his leisure (something he clearly loved doing) and rest up whilst earning a guaranteed fee far in excess of many filling up house show cards on WWF live events.

This kind of light, fluffy and altogether healthy schedule was unheard of amongst wrestlers. McMahon was known to ride his troops until they had nothing more to give. Not Lex, at least not at first. He appeared in WBF vignettes and got paid to do bicep curls in his favourite plush gym.

Some guys get all the luck. No wonder Mr. Perfect decided to drive Luger daft by pulling off one tassel a night from his 'Narcissist' outfit!
