10 Ups & 1 Down From AEW WrestleDream

5. Trios Mayhem Borders On The Incredible

WD Kenny Omega
AEW

Not everything was as well-executed as the layout intended, but mostly, Kenny Omega, Kota Ibushi and Chris Jericho Vs. the Don Callis family was outstanding.

In a strange and roundabout way, this version of Kota Ibushi works now. Fans have lowered their expectations and adjusted to the reality, and he's still so good at animating himself that he remains the only wrestler who can go to "that place" without descending into cringe. He did so in a great sequence in the back half of the match, one elevated by Will Ospreay's brilliance. He took an Ibushi strike like the lights went out immediately (there are few lights in the man's head to begin with, but you get the idea).

For the first time since arriving in AEW in what realistically is a strange run, Ibushi completed his part of the Cross Slash admirably. He's still not the same, but fans are used to it all now.

There wasn't a great deal of narrative ingenuity to this - the heels cheated, the babyfaces hot-tagged, Callis used the bat to win it for his team when the ref lost control of the all-action overspill - but the various pairings were built towards brilliantly, and the action mostly soared.

Omega and Ospreay were the highlight outside of a pulsating exchange between Omega and Sammy Guevara capped off by a brutal, spectacular shooting star to the outside. Ospreay countering the One Winged-Angel with a hurricanrana before flattening Omega with a Sky Twister press indicated that they have yet another out-of-this-world singles in them.

Did Chris Jericho kick out of Guevara's Codebreaker at one because it draws him closer to Omega in their ongoing storyline, or because he saw it and thought it looked cool?

Jury's out!
