10 Ways NXT Can Recapture Its Lost Buzz
7. A Return To Long Term Storytelling
Since the beginning of the Wednesday Night Wars, NXT has seemingly thrown away their commitment to long term storytelling and has fallen into the trap of hotshot booking. Rivalries like Adam Cole versus Keith Lee should have been a long build, especially since it revolved around the two championships. Instead, it was booked extremely quickly and led to a cool moment, but nothing of substance.
NXT needs to commit to building their stories slowly. The slow burn can often lead to the most satisfying payoffs. Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa's feud maybe be a once in a generation story, but the pacing is there. A slow-burn story will hook audiences in and eventually climax in a perfect crescendo.
The biggest missed opportunity seems to be the booking of The Undisputed Era. They are the hottest act in NXT and their downfall seemed to be fumbled a little bit. They claimed all the gold and then the ball was dropped by WWE. With Kyle O'Reilly having a great TakeOver match for the title, maybe this story could be developed further. But it needs to be a slow burn, not a sudden heel turn.
