10 Ways This Has Been The Best WWE WrestleMania Build In YEARS!
4. Creative Storytelling
While it's a long-established fact in pro wrestling that you ultimately need to give the people what they want, the road a company takes to get there is all the more intriguing if it can throw in some worthwhile detours along the way.
Cody Rhodes provides the most obvious example. The son of Dusty was the heavy favourite to dethrone Roman Reigns at last year's 'Mania, yet wound up staring at the lights. What initially appeared to be a major misstep has now culminated in a blockbuster build towards the rematch, as WWE skillfully kept Cody heated despite his failure to win the big one last year.
The undercard has also benefited from the creative team's recent bursts of inspiration. It looked like WWE had shot itself in the foot when Sami Zayn won the opportunity to face Gunther at WrestleMania by beating the hugely popular Chad Gable, but they neatly threaded the narrative by having Gable take on the role of Sami's mentor. As recently opined by WhatCulture scribe Scott Carlson, this works on two levels - it prevents fan resentment for Sami taking Chad's spot, and it makes Gunther look even more imposing by implying he's too big of a challenge for just one wrestler.
WWE may have taken the scenic route with both storylines, but when the scenery is this captivating, who are we to argue?
