10 Ways WWE Can Appeal To The Teenage Demographic
2. Social Commentary
Everyone was an edgy angsty teenager at some point. Teens are just getting to that developmental stage where they realise there is a world much bigger than school and home and that things happen out there everyday that could affect their young lives. As such teens, like with emotion, first begin to explore this new concept in a juvenile and clumsy way, which is why social commentary is so popular with them.
Take for instance, The Hunger Games. Hunger Games seemed to be one massive commentary on government, class politics, resource scarcity and authoritarian control. Quite what it was saying about those topics is unclear, but teens ate it up. Peruse any teenage bookshelf or Netflix list and you will find reams of shallow, hollow critiques of the world around us. It’s a natural part of growing up and one WWE can exploit.
WWE’s writing is hackneyed, lazy and just downright awful at times, which would make it perfect for teenage level social commentary. Imagine if they really took the reigns off Daniel Bryan and let him really go full force with his Save the Earth Power Vegan gimmick. Teens would either whole heartedly agree or hate him for it; either way, they would be reacting. Why not draw parallels between Vince and President Trump? The best part is, WWE doesn’t even need to say anything new or thought provoking, they just need to say something!
