10 Ways WWE Can Be THE Cool Wrestling Company Again
5. Build Faction City
Factions are the lifeblood of a hot wrestling product - even the spine of a dire one.
The Four Horsemen of the Jim Crockett era were eloquent, arm-breaking badasses covered head to lizard shoes in gold. Bobby Heenan's Family fed Hulk Hogan's glory years. Hogan helped WCW overtake his old home of the WWF by ripping off the UWF-i via the nWo - the same UWF-i whose business arrangement with New Japan Pro Wrestling flooded the Tokyo Dome with as many punters as Dave Meltzer ejaculate. The WWF's Gang Warz didn't set 1997 on fire, but D-Generation X did. Evolution made Triple H's 2003-05 reign of terror far less tedious. The Shield helped hasten John Cena's long-overdue schedule reduction - and provided countless trios classics in the interim.
New Japan Pro Wrestling is a company divided by several groups, which owe much to the popularity of its Golden Age. The sight of a likeminded group with easy, natural chemistry beating the ever-loving sh*t out of a babyface is one of wrestling's simple joys - something WWE tends to make complicated by only pushing, or even booking, one faction at a time.
The Shield Vs. The New Day is going to be great, and it required next-to-no build. More of that, please.
