10 Ways WWE Can Break Out Of Their Summer Slump

3. Give John Cena A Call

He might have spent over a decade as the divisive man in wrestling, but WWE desperately need John Cena at the moment. Love him or hate him, he’s by far the company’s biggest star, and the only wrestler not named “Brock Lesnar” who's still capable of moving the viewership needle on his own. His presence always creates excitement, even now as his career’s winding down, and SmackDown generally feels more important when he’s around.

Unfortunately, Cena is currently out of the picture, and won’t be seen again for quite some time. Having proposed to Nikki Bella at WrestleMania 33, he’s expected to miss another few months of television, but returning ahead of SummerSlam (20 August) isn’t completely out of the question.

If there’s any possibility of bringing John back to television ahead of schedule, WWE should be picking up the phone immediately. SD’s main event has become an uninteresting mess without him, and with Jinder Mahal and Randy Orton’s dismal feud set to continue, the brand could really use his star power. Cena’s in a position where he doesn’t need to obey the company’s every beck and call these days, but his return could be the tonic SD needs to kickstart its summer programming.
