10 Ways WWE Can Save Its Floundering Product

2. Turn John Cena Heel

I know, I know, I know... before you throw your hands up in the air and complain about someone mentioning this for the umpteenth time, hear (read?) me out. I think we're a few years, at the very least, away from Cena turning heel. For comparison, Hulk Hogan was a month away from turning 43 when he turned heel and formed the nWo with Scott Hall and Kevin Nash. When Cena is a month away from turning 43, it will be March 2020, and we'll be on the road to WrestleMania 36. Cena, despite what some of you may think, still has a lot left in the tank, provided he can avoid the injury bug. I don't think John Cena will turn heel anytime soon, but I think John Cena should turn heel sometime soon. The top point made about why Cena should remain a face is that nobody can fill the gap he would leave as the top face when it comes to bringing in television ratings, pay-per-view buyrates, ticket sales, merchandise sales, and still be the guy who can be counted on to do endless media appearances and charity work. Whose fault is that? That's WWE's fault for spending all of their time only building up a very small handful of people and never letting anyone reach his level. Look at CM Punk. Look at Daniel Bryan. Look at Ryback, for goodness sake. Whenever those guys were absolutely on fire and looked like they could approach Cena's level at some point, they were either turned heel for no real reason or they were booked terribly and their heat cooled off tremendously. It has happened so many times that it can't be a coincidence. Punk and Bryan, especially, have gripes to make. Bryan is everything you could ever ask your top star to be. Punk is everything you could ever ask your "cool face" to be. If Cena were to turn heel, yes, you would lose out on some merchandise sales from the kids who can't support him anymore, but that's where the kids then turn to asking their parents for a Daniel Bryan shirt or a set of CM Punk wristbands. On top of that, the adult male fans who can't support Cena now would think he was cool all over again, and now you have a different set of fans that are buying Cena merch, to go with the rest of the merch that they're already buying. Bryan can pick up the slack as far as charity work is concerned. We haven't even begun to discuss Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, and Seth Rollins if all of them stay face. No one man is going to completely replace Cena as the top face, but a collective unit can do so, without a doubt. Cena going heel changes everything, though, folks. It turns night into day. It makes everything more interesting, even if Cena has nothing to do with it. People that have been losing interest, or who have lost all interest already, will want to tune in again. Feuds that we've seen before will be fresh all of a sudden (heel Cena VS face Sheamus, for example). It's basically like taking a car that is getting up there in years and changing the engine, adding horsepower, getting a new set of tires, and putting on a sparkling new coat of paint. It gives that car new life, and gives it new mileage that you never thought it could have had. Simple analogy, but it works. Speaking of a move that would change everything...
