The WWE is a global brand in pop culture let alone just sports entertainment, with a worldwide fanbase. As the company continues to evolve over time, so does their recruitment philosophy in terms of talent background and wrestling style. No longer does Vince and co. keep their eyes squarely on American territories and promotions when looking to bolster the rosters. There is a huge emphasis in today’s WWE landscape on scouting the best talent from around the world. As a result, WWE have assembled a predominantly well-crafted roster, across their various brands, with plenty of international flair spread throughout.

Despite this being the case for some time now, WWE has never run a World Cup style tournament.

There was a ‘World Cup’ tournament at the 2018 Saudi Arabian Crown Jewel show, but this was ruined by Shane McMahon’s sweaty sense of entitlement and featured seven American wrestlers with one Mexican that being Rey Mysterio. Safe to say this did not celebrate the company’s depth of international talent.

Today’s roster across all brands has a tremendous depth of international talent, i.e. Kofi Kingston – Ghana, Shinsuke Nakamura – Japan, WALTER – Austria, Bronson Reed – Australia. There is perhaps no greater opportunity than today, for WWE to present a genuine World Cup of wrestling. A World Cup KOTR tournament can function under traditional single-elimination rules, but injecting a national heritage heavy narrative to the event could pop ratings and expand global interest in the product.
