10 WCW Moments That Weren’t Supposed To Happen

6. Nick Patrick's "Fast Count"

WCW's biggest fans will tell you until they're blue in the face that Starrcade 1997 was the pinnacle of company prosperity. Financially, they'd be correct. Creatively and in execution, they wouldn't. There were better pay-per-views than this admittedly historic mishmash of nWo vs. WCW booking.

Perhaps things would've been different had Nick Patrick made a fast count on Hogan's near fall attempt like he was supposed to. Confused? Put it this way: Sting, the top babyface hero and the only one who could nullify 'New World Odour', was made to look like an overhyped fool who couldn't get the job done.

Instead of playing heel ref and counting a quick three, Patrick slapped the mat with a decidedly common cadence. That, according to the likes of Eric Bischoff and others, wasn't supposed to happen. Ol' Nick was scripted to screw Sting out of the belt so the eventual restart and face win would have greater impact.

Did Hogan change things backstage, or did Patrick just botch big time? Who knows.
