By the end of 1998, Scott Hall’s personal problems had progressed from private issue to running joke in WCW – so much so, that he was actually given the gimmick of non-functioning alcoholic in a ridiculous attempt to disguise the fact that he was a useless drunk in real life.

Hall could barely keep it together at work, and was in and out of treatment and in danger of losing his wife and family. Nothing helped, yet his position as one of WCW’s top stars, as the friend and ally of the rest of WCW’s top stars, and as the company’s star witness in ongoing litigation between the WWF and WCW, rendered him unassailable – and he knew it. Hall would drunkenly brag to friends that he was untouchable, that Bischoff simply couldn’t fire him.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t entirely accurate. When WCW managed to settle the litigation with the WWF in early 2000, the major bar to disposing of his services was lifted, and Scott Hall wrestled his last match for the company on February 20th 2000.

Hall has continued to suffer alcohol and drug abuse relapses ever since, resulting in significant health issues. He appears to have finally turned a corner in recent months – here’s hoping he stays straight and reasonably healthy.
