10 Weirdest Patriotic Moments In WWE
8. Mr. America Is Totally, Definitely NOT Hulk Hogan
Hulk Hogan had been associated with all things American for much of his career already, but during his second run in WWE, he literally wrapped himself in the American flag to shield himself from the wrath of Vince McMahon.
After his loss to Hogan at Wrestlemania XIX, McMahon wanted Hogan to sit out the rest of his contract away from the ring, which he hoped would kill Hulkamania once and for all. Hogan instead opted to don a mask and become Mr. America, a red, white and blue-draped wrestler who not only used the same entrance music as Hogan, but many of his signature taunts and moves as well.
Hired "sight unseen" by Stephanie McMahon -- in the only clever part of the entire endeavor -- Mr. America would become an obsession for Vince McMahon as he tried to prove the masked man was really Hulk Hogan. But Mr. America passed a lie detector test and everything.
Eventually, the Mr. America angle would fizzle out when Hogan quit the company, feeling underpaid for the Mr. America gig. Vince McMahon, in the proud tradition of evil bosses from decades of American TV, fired Hogan after he'd quit in order to save face.
The whole thing lasted less than two months, and was pretty weird.
