10 Weirdest WWE Royal Rumble Entrants

2. Mil Máscaras (1997)

WWE's annual over-the-top rope tradition being blessed with the presence of one of lucha libre's 'Big Three', Mil Máscaras, a legendary figure of Mexican wrestling with over three decades of top level experience under his belt, was not particularly peculiar it itself. His behaviour in the match, however, was.

Máscaras was the leading light of a group of luchadors brought in as part of a AAA talent exchange for Royal Rumble 1997, four of whom appeared in the eponymous matchup (future ECW Television champ Super Crazy had earlier appeared in a dark match under the guise 'Histeria'). Entering at the number 11 spot, the legendary masked superstars stuck around for seven minutes, chucking out AAA colleagues Cibernético and Pierroth.

After tossing the latter, Máscaras instinctively climbed the top turnbuckle and splashed the fallen foe on the outside - eliminating himself in the process. Latterly, the move has been recontextualised as Máscaras refusing to do the honours to another wrestler - despite his supposed solution making him look even sillier. It's more likely he was just going through the motions of a typical Mexican wrestling spot - as evidenced by his attempts to climb back in the ring afterwards.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
