Kofi Kingston winning the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 35 was a storied moment in wrestling history. The run leading up to it and the execution of the moment itself were practically flawless. But the aftermath of that has been ridden with flaws at times.

Kofi has become unbeatable, with his last loss coming to Samoa Joe on 1st July’s edition of Raw. But even there he passed out from Joe’s coquina clutch rather than tapping. And it was in a tag team match as well so his last singles loss goes back to BEFORE he became champion.

And this would be great if not for his lack of established competition. He has beaten Kevin Owens, Dolph Ziggler, and Samoa Joe to retain his title. Great talent, but they lack the challenging and imposing nature of a Brock Lesnar or Roman Reigns. He feels more protected than unstoppable and it is starting to wear a bit thin.

This could all change with SummerSlam and Randy Orton. That is much more the type of opponent Kofi should be defeating. But with the damage already done, the best thing for his momentum may be to lose and go onto chasing the belt again.

Kofi has been an amazing champion but his lack of strong opposition has tarnished a lot of what has been a tremendously booked run. Replace some of those title defenses with bigger names and this whole point would be invalid. Yet WWE somehow finds a way to ruin something so very special. Part of this is the wildcard rule, but mostly it goes back to bad booking. Just like the former El Generico has learned.
