The hottest story in wrestling in 1996 was the defection of Scott Hall, WWF's Razor Ramon, and Kevin Nash, WWF's Diesel, to rival promotion WCW. The whole angle felt real, with Hall and Nash making frequent references to a "war" on WCW television and fans not really knowing if they were still under contract with the WWF.

Excitement reached a fever pitch when WWF's play-by-play announcer Jim Ross announced that he was bringing back Diesel and Razor Ramon, as WWF fans genuinely believed they were getting the two megastars back. Sadly, what followed was an ill-advised heel turn for Ross. Thankfully, he still did bring back Razor Ramon and Diesel...well, two guys masquerading as Razor Ramon and Diesel, anyway.

Not only did neither man look like the original men in the gimmicks, but they couldn't accurately portray them either. The phony Razor, Rick Bognar, was easily the worse of the two, possessing absolutely zero charisma nor discernable physique. The man playing Diesel, Glenn Jacobs, may have been more talented and imposing than his counterpart, but he simply did not fit the role of "Big Daddy Cool".

Mercifully, the placeholders were quickly buried by both the booking and commentary teams, so the act was not long for TV. While Jacobs would go on to become the legendary Kane, Bognar's remaining two years in wrestling were unremarkable, and he quietly retired in 1999.
