10 Worst Booking Decisions In SummerSlam History
8. Luger’s Post-Match Celebration
As well as an Undertaker/González rematch, the WWE spent
much of the summer of 1993 building up Lex Luger as their next All-American
hero.
After his elaborate Lex Express tour, Luger was eventually granted a title match, but he had to agree to lose; he wouldn’t be afforded a rematch. Plus, he’d have to wear a protective pad to cover the steel plate in his forearm.
So it was somewhat ironic, then, when in the finish to the match he removed that pad and clattered Yokozuna, sending him tumbling to the outside where he remained for the referee’s ten-count.
The match was over, and so was Luger’s chance to win the title.
But what followed was a post-match celebration that simply wasn’t in line with what had just happened. Sure, Luger had won, but Yokozuna had kept the belt and Luger wouldn’t be getting another chance at the strap. Instead of ruing the error of his ways, Luger celebrated like an American hero: confetti, balloons, flag-waving, and all.
Basically, it was exactly the opposite of how you would really react to seeing your one title shot slip through your fingers… not the most logical post-match booking, but at least the crowd seemed to head home happy.
