1993 was an interesting year for the WWF.

Hulk Hogan had left the company, leaving a massive void at the top of the card. The top candidate to replace him was Lex Luger, because... well, he was basically exactly the same as Hogan but with a metal plate in his forearm.

The former Narcissus turned babyface by bodyslamming WWF Champion, Yokozuna, on a battleship of all places. This led to Luger campaigning for a title match at SummerSlam, which he was granted.

Luger and Yoko had a pretty standard big man match that ended when the champion was counted out, meaning that Lex had won the match but not the title.

That didn't stop Lex from celebrating like he'd been crowned champion, though.

Confetti fell, music blared, and Lex was hoisted up into the air by his fellow wrestlers. The visual was great, but it made absolutely no sense.

The WWF clearly wanted SummerSlam '93 to end with on a high, but didn't want to take the world title off Yokozuna. They tried to have their cake and eat it too, but that just turned everything into a big confusing blob.
