The original WWE Women's Championship was officially created in 1956, but it could trace its lineage back as far as 1948, making it - and this is the technical term - "well old".

Over its long history, the belt passed through the hands of The Fabulous Moolah, Wendi Richter, Sensational Sherri, Trish Stratus, Lita, Chyna, and many more legends of the sport. It was also held by the likes of Debra, The Kat, and Harvey Wippleman, but hey, nobody bats a thousand.

The belt was retired in 2010, following a unification match with the Divas Championship at Night of Champions. Michelle McCool represented the title in the bout, but it was actually her partner Layla who was officially the champion.

This was the period of time where "LayCool" were calling themselves the "co-Women's Champions", despite Layla being the one to actually win the thing in a handicap match against Beth Phoenix. This meant that, when the belt's legendary lineage came to an end, it did so under very confusing circumstances.

Also, with the greatest respect to Layla, it probably would have been better if the more accomplished McCool had gone out as the final champion.
