When Bret Hart stepped into the ring with Bill Goldberg at Starrcade '99, fans didn't know what to expect when the technical master crossed paths with the brute force of Goldberg. Much like the fans, it's fair to say that neither did Bret.

Having already spent much of the match throwing "working" strikes that Mike Tyson would be proud of, Goldberg continued his assault on 'The Hitman' in and out of the ring. Even during one of Hart's trademark moves, the Figure Four around the ring-post, Goldberg neglected to grab Hart's foot, causing Bret to hit his head on the floor below.

After ten minutes of action, Goldberg reversed an Irish Whip, catching Hart on the rebound with a mule kick that could behead a rhino and almost sent Bret's skull into the third row. The match would end soon after in typically confusing WCW fashion but the damage was done.

Bret continued to wrestle over the weeks that followed but sadly the problem remained. Bret had suffered a severe concussion from the errant kick, which led to post-concussion syndrome in the aftermath. Hart was forced to retire as a result and would suffer a debilitating stroke a year later, after suffering another blow to the head during a bicycle accident.
