The fall of 2013 for WWE was not a good one, largely because The Authority were all over Raw at that point in time. Plus, there was no WWE champion with the title constantly being held in a state of "abeyance" (another one of those vintage buzzwords from WWE) after Daniel Bryan won the belt in fluky fashion at Night of Champions.

The new champion was scheduled to be determined at the inaugural installment of Battleground in a bout between Bryan and Randy Orton. For a second straight show, they contested a solid main event, but it was far from as great as it should have been considering how talented they are.

It wasn't so much the match being underwhelming that caused fans to sour on this show than it was the awful ending. Before Bryan or Orton could come out on top, a torn Big Show emerged from the back, unsure of what he should do. At first, he knocked out Bryan, doing The Authority's bidding in the process, before laying out Orton as well.

Essentially, the match was ruled a no contest. That would be fine for any ordinary episode of Raw, but for a pay-per-view main event (pre-WWE Network), it was a slap in the face of anyone who bothered to buy it.
