10 Worst Movies Starring Wrestlers (That You Probably Haven't Seen)
6. The Rock - Southland Tales (2006)
Dwayne Johnson is so talented and so charismatic that he managed to become the most iconic wrestler of all time and a legitimate A-list Hollywood actor almost by willpower alone. Most of his movies are pretty decent, and the best of them are simply awesome.
This one is not one of those, although, unlike a lot of the movies on this list, at least it looks like a real movie.
Southland Tales is the follow-up to director Richard Kelly's superb debut film, Donnie Darko – a masterpiece that almost single-handedly launched the career of Jake Gyllenhaal. And while it is incredibly weird and surreal like Donnie Darko, that's about where the similarities end.
Whereas his freshman effort was loved by critics and audiences alike, Kelly's sophomore effort was lambasted upon its first screening at Cannes. Unfortunately for everyone involved (and the film did have a stellar cast to be fair), things didn't get any better from there.
Critics found the film to be an incomprehensible disaster, which led to a classic studio panic. The movie's theatrical release was shelved, and it only opened in 63 theatres across the entire United States, grossing less than $400,000 while on screens. It sat neglected and unwatched while Kelly continued to torpedo his filmmaking career.
