10 Worst WCW Gimmicks Ever

9. Oklahoma

Two entries in and we've already had two Vince Russo creations. Ed Ferrara was Russo's right-hand man and followed his friend to WCW in 1999 when the company became desperate for anything to help their sinking ratings. They brought in Russo because he claimed to be responsible for the WWF's Attitude Era and promised to do the same for WCW. Unfortunately, that was not the case. One of Russo's "great ideas" was to have Ferrara do an extremely offensive impression of Jim Ross. Russo christened the new character Oklahoma and assigned Ross's friend Steve Williams as his bodyguard. Ferrara proceeded to contort his face to mock Jim Ross's fight with Bell's Palsy and screamed in an awful accent. We could almost forgive Russo if this was a one-night thing but no, Oklahoma would not die. In fact, Russo booked his fat, out-of-shape writing partner to win the cruiserweight title from Madusa after hitting her with a bottle of BBQ sauce. The gimmick was completely offensive and the backlash was huge. When Jim Cornette saw Ferrara a few years later, he spit in Ed's face and challenged him to a fight for making fun of Ross. Ferrara has since apologized to JR and was even a guest on his podcast earlier this year but that doesn't change the fact that gimmick was completely terrible.
