10 Worst WCW ‘On A Pole’ Matches
7. Crowbar Vs. Meng - Thunder (Jan 3, 2001)
Object atop: a steel chair.
There were several plot holes to step into here. We know the objective of this particular pole match wasn't simply to retrieve the chair from the pole, because after precisely nothing in the way of suspense, Crowbar grabbed it in just over a minute. The referee, who probably had no idea what was going on, didn't call for the bell. We were left to infer that the objective was to unhook the chair purely to legally deploy it as a weapon - the slight logic behind which was rendered baffling when Crowbar located another chair at ringside with which to choke Meng. So, the anti-climactic climb was rendered pointless, to boot. Hilariously, Tony Schiavone - not for the first time - exposed the folly with his damning, straight man delivery: "What we have here is an alternate chair."
The workrate itself was as clumsy as the rules. At one point, Crowbar attempted to drill Meng with his Crowbar Bomb signature. He dove straight onto Meng's knees, not even bothering with the pretence that it was an attempt at an offensive manoeuvre.
If he sh*t himself at the prospect of hurting his legendarily tough opponent, that is at least more understandable than the match layout.
