In the early days of the WWWF, it was considered a "babyface territory," meaning that the traditional business model was built around a good guy on top fighting off a series of heel challengers. It worked out pretty well, as during Bruno Sammartino's seven-and-a-half-year-long title reign, he sold out Madison Square Garden dozens of times.

Everything has to end eventually, though, and when it was time for Sammartino to lose the title, it had to be to a bad guy. In stepped Ivan Koloff, who stunned thousands of fans in MSG when he beat Bruno for the title. In keeping with the business model, he only held it for three weeks before putting over a new babyface champion, Pedro Morales.

Morales was a beloved champ, but not quite as successful as Bruno, so the company made the decision to go back to the erstwhile titleholder. Once again, though, Bruno couldn't just beat Morales, so the villainous Stan Stasiak got the nod.

Unlike with Koloff, Stasiak's victory isn't well-remembered or regarded, and his reign lasted only nine days.
