Wrestling should be about the wrestlers, and at no time was this more apparent than the overbooked mess which headline WrestleMania 16. A fatal four-way involving Triple H, Rock, Big Show and Mick Foley sounds sufficiently epic to main event the show, but Vince's legendary ego got in the way, and he needlessly forced a member of his family into each competitor's corner. He also played a crucial role in the match's outcome, turning on the Rock and helping Triple H to retain in a highly unpopular move. This was the first instance of the heel winning to close a WrestleMania, something which had to take place sooner or later, but which was handled very clumsily here. The Game, although in the midst of his most impressive year with the company, was nowhere near a star of Rock's stature. The Brahma Bull would go on to win the title at the following PPV (with the help of a returning Stone Cold Steve Austin), in an enthusiastically received finish many believed should have taken place a month earlier. It's hard to argue otherwise.
