10 Worst WrestleMania Moments Ever
2. Piper’s Blackface
If a white wrestler put on blackface today, they wouldn't get out of the locker room before they were seen by someone in management and quickly fired. In 1990, though, Roddy Piper was given free reign to paint his body half black for some kind of idiotic race related statement for his match with Bad News Brown.
One might assume that this was a one-time poor judgement call on Piper’s part. But the thing is, he didn’t just do it one time! He also wore black face on an episode of Wrestling Challenge a few weeks before WrestleMania (in which he claimed he could be black...no, not really). At WrestleMania, the announcers seemed more amused and confused over Piper’s shenanigans, rather than calling him out for something that had been offensive for decades.
As the years have gone by, this stunt has become more awful to watch play out. You would think at some point Piper might have felt a tinge of embarrassment for doing it, or maybe even apologize! Not so, as he offered up a strange response when asked later if it was racist: “First of all, you know, I was born in Saskatoon. There are no Black people that I know of that are dumb enough to go to a place that cold. So, there's no racism in me at all." Wait. What?
Well, unsurprisingly the match itself wasn’t very good. Whatever statement Piper was going for was lost in translation, and it remains one of the most absurd and worst Mania moments ever.
