For so long, the traditional WrestleMania format has the show end with a babyface victory. Makes sense: since WrestleMania is WWE's annual blockbuster moviegoing experience, it's only fitting that you have a triumphant ending to send the crowd home happy.

However, one of these days, that format was going to have to be subverted, and what better time to do that than the ever-subversive Attitude Era. That said, Triple H retaining his title at WrestleMania 2000 was the perfect cocktail of wrong place, wrong time, and wrong people involved.

By 2000, The Rock had become the biggest star in the industry, and with Steve Austin out with a neck injury, fans were gagging for the Great One to rightfully claim his spot at the top of the company and wrangle the title from the evil Triple H. Unfortunately, the two were not allowed that one-on-one showdown at 'Mania, instead having to share the spotlight with Big Show, Mick Foley, and the four McMahons, as the theme of the show was "A McMahon in every corner." Oy vey.

Still, with Foley and Show eliminated, now Rocky had his chance to get the win over Hunter and end the show holding the title aloft. Nope! Instead, Vince (who was in Rock's corner) turned on the Brahma Bull and helped Hunter retain his title. Thus, Triple H became the first heel to win the main event of WrestleMania.

WrestleMania 2000 is seen as the big dud of Attitude Era 'Manias, and it didn't help that it had this groan-inducing finish.
