10 Worst Wrestling Publicity Stunts
7. Trump Vs. O'Donnell
If you're still getting over the shock of Jinder Mahal being the WWE champion, remember: Donald Trump is an actual president. And not of a WASP country club or a golfing lodge, but the United States of America. For many, the sheer incredulity (and novelty) has worn off, but it's sometimes worth reminding ourselves of this ridiculous scenario so we don't become complacent.
The further fact this list could be entirely populated with episodes of Trump's involvement with WWE hammers home the ludicrous nature of the current presidential situation. But let's not get overly political here. The ribald Republican's initial involvements with the company were based solely on business, but after The Donald became famous thanks to The Apprentice, Vince McMahon leaned on his friend's fame for publicity.
The WrestleMania 'Battle of the Billionaires' attention-grab was as flagrant as it got, but at least it drew buys. The catalyst for that showdown was far more ignoble.
With Raw airing on the same station as The Apprentice, some bright spark at the USA Network suggested Trump feature in the ring to cross-promote the show. Trump was also embroiled in his bitter, unedifying feud with television host Rosie O'Donnell at the time, and the temptation to capitalise was too much for Vince McMahon to resist.
Incredibly introduced as the 'Left-Leaning Lesbian', an unflattering O'Donnell impersonator lumbered down to ringside to square off with a Trump impersonator, with no prizes for guessing who came out on top. Somehow, this all led to the real Trump alighting on Raw, apparently eager to be involved in an angle so bad, the crowd was moved to chant "TNA!" of all things. Utter bum guff.
