Most fans suspected that Baron Corbin would walk out of Money In The Bank 2017 with the briefcase in his clutches. ‘The Lone Wolf’ was identified as a heavy favourite months in advance, and the betting odds never wavered. As a result, few were surprised when he scaled the ladder and scored the prize on 18 June, which sapped some excitement from what had been an outstanding match.

Corbin shouldn’t be a horrendous Mr. Money In The Bank. Holding the briefcase works for his opportunistic heel character, and he’s nowhere near as skill deficient as his detractors would have you believe. Still, his victory was a deeply uninspiring choice, and his presence will do little to energise SmackDown’s ailing main event picture.

Jinder Mahal and Randy Orton have shrouded the WWE Championship scene with crippling boredom. Having somebody the fans are legitimately invested in (a Sami Zayn or Shinsuke Nakamura) enter the frame could’ve at least shaken some of that away, but alas, not for the first time this year, WWE went with the least interesting option, missing the opportunity to revive SD’s main event in the process.
