The one and only WWE Title reign of Sgt. Slaughter is something that happened due largely to the fact that the United States was involved in a war with Irag. The Gulf War in the early 1990s was well known among the American people. Even though Slaughter was booked as an American hero in his initial WWE run in the early 1980s, when he came back in 1990 (he was in the AWA for about five years prior to that) he was an American turncoat. They ended up putting the WWE Title on Slaughter at the 1991 Royal Rumble when he defeated the Ultimate Warrior thanks to the interference of Randy Savage. It was hard to justify Slaughter even getting a title shot because he wasn't even in WWE for five years prior, but due to the gimmick they pushed him to the top. His two month reign didn't provide much excitement. As expected he put over Hulk Hogan clean in the WrestleMania 7 main event as the Hulkster became the WWE Champion again. Slaughter never really came close to getting another WWE Title reign. He was pushed because of the war that was going on.
