10 Worst WWE Championship Matches In WrestleMania History
1. Triple H Vs. Randy Orton (WrestleMania 25)
It would be easy to blame The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels for this match being considered a dud. After all, it's hard to top what many people feel to be the greatest WrestleMania match of all time. But even if we accept that Triple H and Randy Orton would be playing second fiddle to 'Taker/HBK, that doesn't justify how laughably average this match was - especially given its build.
This match was the main event for a reason: Randy Orton had won the Royal Rumble and was at the height of his evil sadist run. Tensions had been high between him and Triple H for a year, and Orton was on a mission to destroy The Game's life: head-punting Vince, torturing Shane, and RKO'ing Stephanie and sexually assaulting her while Hunter was helplessly handcuffed. This was a storyline full of family feud, brawling, home invasions, and all manner of proper main-event build.
And then Randy and Hunter had a match wherein if Hunter was counted-out or DQ'd, he'd lose the title.
Make no mistake: this stipulation absolutely damaged this match's potential. Here are two performers who are already on the methodical (to be generous) side, to weigh them down with a stip that actively removes the carnage is nothing less than outright sabotage. The story of Triple H needing to keep his cool in order to retain his title just makes no sense with how tertiary the actual belt is in this storyline.
This ranking may seem hyperbolic, but this was the biggest stage with the biggest potential... utterly wasted.
