At Unforgiven 2006, John Cena defeated Edge to begin a WWE Championship reign that would last for 380 days.

For the first time since Randy Savage in the late 1980s, a wrestler had been entrusted with the company's standard for over a full year. This was the sign that WWE had big things in mind for the young man in camo jorts.

It would also be the beginning of his undoing.

Fans had already begun to grow bored of Cena as a main eventer during his first lengthy title run in 2005/6. This reign would be ever longer and fan patience would hit rock bottom. It's not like there weren't good moments. Cena's matches against Edge, Shawn Michaels, and Umaga were all very good, but 380 days of the same bland character on top was just too much.

The champ had lost any of the flair that had made him so popular just a few years earlier. This was a sanitised, family-friendly Cena, and people weren't buying it. He didn't even have the decency to put someone over on the way out, as he lost the title via injury
