Tribal Chief Roman Reigns is one of the best characters in wrestling today but the bad taste left by years of shoving The Big Dog down our throats still lingers. Things are better than they were, but boy, they were pretty bad for a long while.

The 2015 Royal Rumble should have told WWE all it needed to know about what it was about to do. For the second straight year the crowd rejected the match and its winner, desperate for Daniel Bryan to succeed but being given a company-approved winner instead. In 2014, it was Batista. In 2015, Roman Reigns.

What makes 2015 worse is that Bryan was in the match, only to be easily dispatched by Bray Wyatt quite early on. The rest of the match was dominated by Big Show and Kane (in 2015!), as WWE banked on the crowd hating them so much that they would cheer Roman. It didn't work out like that, and what followed was one of the most vociferous negative reactions to a WWE match in history.

The match killed Reigns in the eyes of many fans. The situation couldn't even be salvaged by The Rock saving Roman and giving him the post-match seal of approval. It was a miserable mess, to say the least.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
