10 Worst WWE SummerSlam Main Events Ever

5. Yokozuna vs. Lex Luger (1993)

Much like The Ultimate Warrior, Vince McMahon wanted to make 'American Hero' Lex Luger his next pet project to follow the pattern of success laid down by Hulk Hogan. In similar fashion to Warrior, Luger couldn't remove himself from the shadow of Hulk, and somewhat bombed in the role. The finish to his SummerSlam 1993 main event against Yokozuna really didn't help. Going on a lengthy, cross-county tour in a bus called the 'Lex Express', Luger rallied support for the encounter. Fans were behind him, wanting to buy into the WWF hype machine, which had been on overload since Luger hit Yoko with a Body Slam in July. The original plan called for Lex to win the WWF Title at SummerSlam, but somewhere along the line that idea was changed. The whole build to SummerSlam '93 relied on Luger emerging victorious. Slogans such as, 'Can He Be Stopped?' (in reference to Yokozuna) were used as hype, but the answer was no. Even though Lex Luger won by count out on the night, he didn't grab the gold. This was a foolish move by McMahon, Lex needed the big babyface victory here. Sadly, the match itself didn't cut it. Fans were clearly now already more conditioned to watching exciting, wrestling-focused main events featuring Bret Hart.
